Malcolm Grech

Malta-based developer building software and interactive systems across Unity, Unreal Engine, AI, tooling, web technologies, and production support. My work sits between practical engineering and player-facing experience: shipping reliable features, debugging gameplay and UI flows, creating internal tools, supporting analytics, and turning prototypes or research ideas into clear, usable products.

Academic Research

Academic research is anchored by two thesis projects. My MSc thesis, The Effects of Map Features in RTS Gameplay, investigates how measurable RTS map features such as path structure, choke points, base exits, symmetry, and resource safety can bias matches toward different MicroRTS agent strategies through evolved map datasets and quantitative analysis. My BSc thesis, Tracing Historical Paths, designed an intelligent AR tour guide that combined preference-aware pathfinding, a recommender system, and augmented-reality navigation cues to create more personalized heritage journeys instead of always defaulting to the shortest route.

Applied Software

Internal security-awareness game, AI chatbot research and implementation, Unity prototypes, analytics work, and production support across shipped and in-development products.

Education and Skills

University of Malta training in AI and digital games, supported by long-term interests that build discipline, creativity, and focus.

My academic path combines a strong artificial intelligence foundation with advanced game development study, giving me both the technical grounding to build intelligent systems and the design awareness to create purposeful interactive experiences.

Education

Each degree sharpened a different side of my profile: intelligent systems, practical development, and research-led problem solving.

Master of Science in Digital Games

Started in 2021. A 90 ECTS postgraduate programme at the University of Malta focused on designing, developing, and critically evaluating digital games. It strengthened my work in game creation, production awareness, and research, and directly supported my RTS gameplay thesis work.
